PSOTC.7.1 UN Staff Officers Course (UNSOC)



Course Aim:

To prepare military staff officers for UN Integrated/Multidimensional Peacekeeping Operations so they can work effectively at Force and Sector HQs levels in UN peacekeeping missions and to turn a capable military officer into a competent UN staff officer.

Course subjects:

Fundamentals of Peacekeeping
Mandate, Duties and Tasks in UN Peacekeeping Operations
International Legal Framework for PKO
UN Protection of Civilians
UN Mission, Force and Sector HQ Organization and Operations
Application of Military Component Planning Process
Control execution of an operation in contemporary PKO
Negotiation and Mediation
UN Integrated approach
Working with Media


Participants may be of the ranks from Captain—Lieutenant Colonel (OF-2 up to OF-4) from NATO, PfP, MD, ICI.
Pre-requisites: Participants should be nationally trained in military decision making process or have working experience as staff officers in an operational environment. Language proficiency: English language IAW STANAG 6001: 2,2,2,2.

Up to 40 national and international participants.


UNSOC was created as a result of AAR for International Peace Support Operations Staff Officer Course that was conducted at PSOTC since 2009. The Analysis phase of this course was triggered by PSOTC members with UN operational experience and COTIPSO.
UNSOC has been designed in line with NATO Systems Approach to Training (SAT) in order to met UN requirements.
